My last blog was mostly a sporadic explosion of suppressed emotion. I had intended to mention Debbie's death, but apparently I needed to say more about the situation than just list it off like a part of my normal day. At any rate, I know it's been a while since I updated you all on my study abroad adventures. I won't go into specifics about what I've been up to, but I'll give you the highlights. I briefly mentioned in the last post that I went on a field trip to Ravenna. Helen is the art history professor of SACI and she's remarkable. She's over 60 and has more energy than I've had in my last 20 years. She runs multiple miles before going to class or going on these insane field trips. I'm telling you, it's a travelers version of P90X. Helen goes nonstop from about 7AM to 8PM. She barely needs a lunch break and I've even heard that she purposefully does not drink water because she doesn't want to have to stop to use the bathroom. Anyways, she's a trooper for sure. She took us all around Ravenna and took us to see everything imaginable from the Early Renaissance period. Needless to say I was exhausted about an hour into the tour and continued to be exhausted the rest of the day. I wish I had had more energy to focus and enjoy the trip but I didn't have the energy to do that.
Sunday was much more relaxed but Monday went right back to chaos. On Mondays I have class from 9-11:45, 1:15-4, 4:45-6:30 and then a required open drawing session from 8-10PM. Again, needless to say I was completely exhausted about half way through my day. But when my insane day was over, I got to go to the train station and pick up one of my best friends from home, my maid of honor, Shelby. The familiar face was more than comforting, I can't explain how comforting it was. It was so nice to have conversation flow naturally, without having to pick someone's brain about where they're from, their major, etc. love meeting new people, but it can get repetitive sometimes. It's nice to be passed that with a familiar face.
On Tuesday night, we decided to stay in and eat instead of going out to a restaurant. Shelby and I went to the store to buy ingredients and she made us pasta with a homemade sauce. It was very tasty and we couldn't beat the price either :) On Wednesday night we had some friends over and made a homemade meal again. Sally made us all a vegetable parmesan with a side of pasta with olive oil and parmesan cheese. It was so tasty! There are three girls who go to Drew that we accidentally met at a gelato store on the first night of orientation that we have been hanging out with a lot. We have gotten to the point where it actually feels like we have all been friends for quite a while now and I love that feeling! We are trying to plan trips together so that we can all travel! I'm so excited for that.
On Thursday night, Alex, Sally and I went to a "cooking class." Except it was actually a lecture on Italian cooking but there was food so that was good. She made us pasta with pesto and then some bruschetta as well. I don't even like bruschetta but it was delicious! We finished the night off with some tiramisu, again, I don't even like tiramisu but it was amazing. There's something about Italian cooking that's just better than anything we have in the States.
On that note, I've summed up everything that is interesting. Hopefully I'll have more to tell you after I go on another Helen field trip to Pisa this weekend! Ciao :)
