Pisa :)

It's always really hard to decide what to blog about. Sometimes I'm in a very talkative mood and writing just flows out from me but others, I find nothing worthy in sharing the mundane details of the last few days. But, I know that I won't remember all of the things I do everyday and this is a way to keep track of the major things.

On Friday I went with a group of friends to a restaurant called Astor. I have always loved not having classes on Fridays at High Point but it's been especially nice in Italy. Especially when you take into account that the last two weekends I've been on a field trip on Saturday, an extra day of the weekend is definitely needed! Back to this past Friday- Astor is an American style restaurant that at night turns into a bar. The whole place is very modern and while it isn't overly American, it definitely was different than a lot of the normal restaurants in town. I can't say that I was exactly craving American food, but I couldn't pass it up. I had to know if it was a good place to go! They run a daily special for €10 that has a burger, fries and unlimited soda refills. Okay, you can't get free refills anywhere in this country, so that's a deal within itself! I didn't really want fries but by the time I got a drink of any kind, the deal was basically cheaper, so I went for it. The food was actually pretty tasty and now I know that if I'm ever craving a burger and fries, I can find a good one there!

After lunch, we all went back to school and decided to try to plan some trips together. After looking at many many websites with the same trip but different things included, we decided on a trip to the Amalfi Coast over Easter weekend! I am so excited to go on a trip with the group of friends we have here but also to hopefully get some sunshine! I don't think it'll quite be bathing suit weather but I won't need to wear 15 layers of clothing under my jacket and that sounds wonderful to me! We also booked a day trip to Venice during the Carnival in the middle of February. I can't wait to take a trip with friends where we are in control of what we do! Even though it's only for a day, it will still be well worth it! I can't wait.

Aside from those trips with friends I have also been trying to plan out my spring break with Steven! He's going to be here for about two weeks and we will start in Milan, hopefully go to Ireland, possibly Rome and then back to Florence before I start classes again. But before he has to go back to the States, we will be going to visit our friends Ryan and Delia in Barcelona! I am SO excited! I'm also in the midst of trying to plan a trip to Paris with friends so I am knee-deep in travel websites, airline websites, etc. It's a little overwhelming but nothing a good spreadsheet can't make sense of! :)

Yesterday I went on another Helen field trip! This one was MUCH better but by 4 PM, I was worn out and ready to go home. By that point we didn't have much left in our trip so that was a blessing. We started the day out bright and early again and headed to Pisa! I think my excitement to see the leaning tower was exponentially more excitement than I had last weekend to Ravenna. I actually enjoyed seeing things I hadn't seen before whereas Ravenna was almost like a nightmare that brought me back to my art history class from last semester- no thank you!

The Leaning Tower was pretty sweet, I can't lie. I was expecting it to be taller because in pictures it always look massive! When we took our pictures in front of it, I knew that it was just the way the pictures were taken. You almost expect for it to not actually lean when you get there though because all of the pictures look like they could be photoshopped! The main three monuments in Pisa are all in a central courtyard that is the main part of the town. We saw all three of these which were the Duomo/cathedral, the Baptistry and finally the Tower! We saw a lot more places than these three, including three different cathedrals in Lucca, two museums, and a few piazzas. But these were my particular highlights and that may be just because it was the first places we went to!

Overall the trip was great! I'm really excited for all of the trips that have been planned and are being planned! I've loved getting lost in Florentine exploration but I'm anxious to explore the rest of Europe, and mainly anxious to go somewhere that I can speak the language :)
