Day One... wait what is today?

Well, after almost 12 hours of travelling, we finally made it to Florence. Only by a miracle of God, we didn't have any other issues once we were in the air from Charlotte to Munich. When we landed, we were all running off about two hours of sleep and that alone put us on edge that something else would go wrong. When we got on the plane, it was almost midnight in Florence. Dinner was served around 2 AM. There was the option of a chicken or pasta meal but by the time they got to us (in the very last row of the plane) there was only pasta left. I wasn't opposed to the idea, I mean I am going to Italy for four months. When I began to eat the pasta though, I realized that it was much too spicy for my taste. I couldn't imagine anyone who didn't like spicy food enjoying the dish at all. But it sufficed and then I tried to sleep. The problem ended up being that my entire body was insanely confused as to what time it was. It felt like I was still on New Mexico time, which was about 7 pm, but it also felt like it was Eastern time, all the while I'm telling it that it needs to be on Florentine time. With all of the confusion I was pumping into my body, needless to say, I didn't sleep well at all. On top of that, I was never hungry because my eating schedule was completely messed up. So the three of us didn't eat the entire day after we arrived in Munich (with the exception of Alex who tried the mini wiener schnitzel that we were given on the plane from Munich to Florence). I, however, couldn't keep the very little that was left in my stomach because of the turbulence and ended up getting sick on the plane (TMI, I know).

After arriving in Florence, we got a taxi to take us to school to get our housing assignments. Our taxi driver was a very nice man who actually spoke English fairly well. Our sentences to him had to be short, sweet, and to the point, but we were able to tell him that we were studying art for four months. To which he told us that was very dangerous... for the florentine boys. That provided us some comic relief :) Thankfully we were all placed in the same apartment. It was a welcomed blessing to find that out after all of the chaos getting to Florence. After trying to walk to our apartment with our luggage, we gave up and got a taxi. Our apartment is nice, but it is very Italian. It is larger than some of the others (we've heard) but there is only one bathroom for five girls. Our beds are more like cots with a 4-6 inch mattress. But we all slept very well our first night and were very thankful for that.

Today we are getting to explore some of Florence's main monuments with an art history professor. Alex and Sally have already been out today so I think I'll be navigating my way to the school by myself. It will be interesting considering I have only walked their once on my own! Buona fortuna a me! Tonight the three of us (and any others we meet) will be going to one of my favorite restaurants in town that I discovered the last time I was here! Can't wait :)

My next post will have pictures, I promise!

Ciao!
