I've been apart from Melanie Auerbach for a total of four days now and I have to admit, my life is completely mundane without her. In honor of my trip to New York and my two weeks with this wonderful lady, I decided I needed to post just some of the highlights of the trip.
1. Beach Trip
There are too many things to list here but starting off our adventure at the beach. It was the perfect (and yet not so perfect) way to relax and start off the summer. At least the first day was pretty close to perfection. I am so thankful for the Brock family for opening up their home to a bunch of college students and allowing us to come and enjoy Topsail Island.
2. Green Cactus- I have to add this one in here solely because this restaurant is probably one of the very few Mexican restaurants I've found on the east coast that are at all noteworthy. The place was nicely remodeled, the food was delicious and mostly I remember the conversations Mel and I had over our burritos. It had been a while since we had really had the chance to have an in depth conversation just about life. It definitely made my top moments.
3. Photo adventures
There were many that happened over the trip, but as a general note, they were definitely a favorite part of the trip. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm happiest when I'm behind the camera (although I do enjoy the spotlight once in a while).
4. Bunco Night
Melanie and I had the pleasure of helping her mom host Bunco Night for the month of May. Because it was May, she wanted to do a Cinco de Mayo theme, or as we called it, Cinco de Bunco (or it may have been referred to at Bunco de Mayo...don't quite remember). I absolutely love parties to begin with and it was so much fun to get to cook everything and be a part of the fun! Mel and I had a great time preparing guacamole, quesadillas, strawberry shortcake toss, and other festive foods. If the preparation and feast weren't good enough, playing bunco was an absolute blast! I even won a prize which I must say is pretty rare for me.
5. Connecticut
There are PLENTY of stories that go along with this little adventure, but I'll be honest, most of them are not entirely great memories. However, there were particular things that we did that were good memories and I'll just focus on those. First of all, we were able to meet up with Alicia and spend time with her. Even though it had only been about a week since leaving school, I was definitely missing Alicia. It was so nice to just be around her and get to spend the day shopping with two of my best friends. Another highlight was getting to go to California Pizza Kitchen with Melanie and her sister Danielle. I knew they were enjoying being around each other and I had a great time also.
6. New York City
For as many stories as there are from our trip into the city, you would think we were there for multiple days, not hours. This day trip turned out to be pretty epic, both in good and bad ways. We began the day at Hillsong Church NYC which was fantastic. I had been to a service a few months back and I was incredibly anxious to get back. The energy in that church is amazing. I think it's safe to say all three of us (Mel, Danielle and myself) enjoyed the service! Then we went to a local diner where we learned that it's customary to be charged for sharing plates and even getting to go boxes in the city. Then we went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (view blog here). Finally we began our very complicated journey back to Long Island. This journey involved taking a few wrong subway lines, cinnamon pretzels, and one extremely negative lady who can talk for hours without ceasing. It was certainly an epic and noteworthy day trip.
7. North Carolina Buddies
I was lucky enough that the end of my trip in NY coincided with the beginning of Kristin, Aimee and Ashley's trip. It was so great to see these girls and get to spend time with them. We got to spend an entire day out at the Riverhead Aquarium, eating lunch at Panera, and finishing the day off with great bargains from an outlet mall.
8. The Great Flood of 2011
Unfortunately, it rained for a good portion of the trip. We did get a few days without rain, but it definitely rained enough at night. On the last night of the trip, we had a bad run in with the rain. Melanie's basement window had been cracked open and then also had a broken seal which led to a basement full of soaked papers and other things. It was such great timing though because with the five of us and the addition of Melanie's mom and uncle, we were able to get stuff out of the basement really quickly which I definitely think helped to prevent a ton of damage. This may not sound like a great way to spend a last night of a trip but honestly, I loved being there to help. I really don't know what Melanie and her mom would've done if it had just been the two of them. It was great to band together and help get the job done! The night also ended at Friendly's with lots of food and ice cream, so really, who can complain?
9. Getting stuck in Subways
This technically belongs in the NYC section, but it's a pretty important part so I decided it should be on it's own. Part of the adventure of trying to get back to Long Island included hurrying to get onto subways. At one particular time, we decided to get onto a subway that had been sitting for a while and didn't look like it was leaving very quickly. Turns out that we picked the moment when it wanted to leave. First, the doors closed and Melanie's umbrella held it open. After the doors flung open again, I made a dash to get inside. The doors then decided to close on me instead. I had to pry the door open using brute strength, as it seems they were determined to take off the right half of my body. Finally we made it on the subway though and as only Melanie and I would, we were laughing hysterically at our near death moment. All the while, the people on the subway looked at us like we were mental.
10. Pancake breakfast, six pans later
11. Diner lunches in the rain
12. Mother's day Chinese dinner with our very Chinese waiter, Greg
13. "Any fool can make a baby, but it takes a man to raise a child."
14. Little House, Close to You and Desert Song
15. "So, I bet you're wondering why I called you to this meeting..." and all of the other hilarious things that Melanie's dad said.
